Say Syrup! A Pancake Portrait Day book cover

Dedication

For every family that gathers in a warm kitchen—
where the days are sweet, the laughter sizzles,
and love rises with every flip.

This book is for you.

To my Sunshine, whose love stirs the batter of my days,
and to my little pancake boy, whose giggles are a syrupy celebration—
may your joy always stack high, and your hearts stay golden.

And to every tiny helper who's ever stirred the bowl,
licked the spoon, or waited wide-eyed by the stove—
you're part of the magic, too.

Alarm buzzing in pancake bedroom
BZZZZZZZZ!

The alarm buzzed from the syrup shelf like a blender in a hurry.

Mama Banana peeled herself out of bed and slid straight into the kitchen. Papa Buttermilk snored right through it.

Then—FLIP!—he popped out of bed with a buttery bounce.

"Up and at 'em!" he said, landing in one syrup slipper and one jam jar.

"It's Portrait Day! We want to be golden, round, and proud—no flops in the photo today!"

In a cozy little kitchen on Maple Lane, something big was cooking.

Grandma Maple had called everyone home—every fluffy, syrupy one of them.

From Banana to Blueberry, and even little Choc Chip with chocolate on her heels.

The Pancake House was full of the morning stir—whisks clinking, bowls clattering, someone stepping in flour (again).

Papa Buttermilk winked at the mirror.

"I was born for this," he said, "Soft in the middle, golden on the brink!"

He reached for a bowl—his favorite one, with a chip on the rim and flour dust from fun.

He cracked in an egg with a flourishy snap, then poured in cold buttermilk with a proud little clap.

When the bubbles rose, he gave a flip! "Perfection," he beamed, "from tip to crisp tip."

Mama Banana stood at the pantry door mirror, brushing flour from her cheeks.

"I don't need to be perfect," she said, swirling around. "I just need to be made with love."

She mashed ripe bananas in her favorite mixing bowl—a rosy pink one with hearts painted along the sides.

She gave herself a final swirl in the pan, sizzling with confidence, and flipped with effortless grace.

Blueberry and Choc Chip energetic scene
THUMP THUMP THUMP!

Blueberry burst into the room like a pop-up toaster.

"Splat!" went a berry onto the floor. "Oops!" he grinned, smoothing his whipped cream hair.

Little Sister Choc Chip twirled in her syrupy skirt.

"Do I look melty enough?" she asked, spinning with sparkly socks and fudgey cheeks.

"Bah!" Grandpa Griddle grumbled from his sizzling pan-chair, sipping maple tea from a chipped mug that read Still Flippin'.

"In my day, we didn't need sprinkles to shine—just heat, a spatula, and a good sear!"

Grandma Maple just smiled her syrupy smile, wiping Baby Cinnamon Swirl's cheek.

"One drizzle here... one swirl there... oh, you're all flipping perfect."

Uncle Dosa and Auntie Injera arriving
DING-DONG!

The door swung open—and in swept Uncle Dosa, tall, golden, and as crispy as ever.

"Hello, my fluffy friends!" he called, his edges crackling.

Next came Auntie Injera, soft and speckled, with laughter tucked under her arm.

"Did someone say portrait or potluck?" she beamed.

BANG!

In stomped Cousin Johnnycake, boots dusty with cornmeal.

"Well butter my griddle," he boomed, "Y'all started the party without me?"

And finally, in floated Cousin Crêpe, thin as a whisper and light as a dream, with ribbons of raspberry jam trailing behind her.

"Am I terribly late?" she asked. "I took the scenic route through Paris!"

Camera crew and family setup

The camera crew—a waffle with a headset and a muffin with a camera—leaned in.

"Everyone ready?" the photographer asked. "Scoot in close, cheeks to cheeks!"

"Wait!" shouted Choc Chip. "We forgot Silver!"

And there, curled behind a mixing bowl, was their tiniest pancake pup—Silver.

The Pancake Family piled in, stacked and swirled just right.

Papa stood tall, Mama smoothed her sash, and little Silver gave a proud little bark.

"On the count of three..." said the photographer.

"One... Two... Three... SAY SYRUP!"

FLASH!

Perfect pancake family portrait
Framed pancake family portrait on kitchen wall

That perfect pancake portrait found its home on the kitchen wall, framed in maple wood, kissed by flour dust and family laughter.

And though the griddle would cool, one thing was certain—next year, they'd all be back, flipping, folding, and swirling in once more.

The End.

Author's Note

It all started with a boy who smiled at the word "pancakes," a bear who needed feeding, and a kitchen full of love.

I hope these pages make you giggle, make you hungry, and most of all make you feel at home.

With love and syrup,
